2024 Holiday Tipping Guide
The end of the year is a great time to give a little extra love to the people who support you all year long. Whether that's friends, your doorman, your nail tech, or the guy who bags you up every week at Trader Joe's, there's always an opportunity to say thank you…
Here's my guide for who to tip during the holidays and how much:
Super: $75-$175
Door(wo)man: $50-$150 total
Maintenance/ Garage/ Handyman: $25-$75
Nanny/ Housekeeper/ Daycare/ Dog Walker: One week’s pay or small gift
Delivery Drivers: $25 - $50 (but give more if you’re addicted to online shopping and get 100 packages a week)
Mail Carrier: Up to $20 (which is the legal limit)
Teacher/ Tutor: Small gift or <$75 gift card (no cash!)
Trainer/ Hair Stylist: One session or small gift
AND REMEMBER:
+ UPS can accept a small gift or gratuity
+ FedEx can accept a gift up to $75 but it can't be cash or gift cards
+ USPS can accept a gift up to $20 but it can’t be cash or gift cards
Hostess: Slip them a $10
Waiters: I like bumping my tip up to 25% during the holidays
Okay, first of all- I firmly believe if you can’t tip then you shouldn’t be getting these services. Like for most door people, their salaries are low and they RELY on you tipping them during the holidays to supplement their income. I know inflation is hitting and you have a million people to buy gifts for this holiday season, but I really feel like it’s more important to tip the people you work with consistently who make lower wages than to get your niece a Rhode phone case… Hot take! But you know my ass is right…
However- if you are really struggling this year- make a homemade gift. You could make the Christmas Toffee I made last week. I gave some to my dog walker (who is also getting a week’s pay) and look at his cute text to me:
